Investing in South Dakota

Reliable energy doesn’t happen by accident – it takes steady investment and long-term commitment. That’s why we’re strengthening the systems that keep homes and businesses powered and comfortable. We continue to reinvest where it matters most, in the pipes and wires that deliver electricity and natural gas across the state.

In recent years, that has included more than $100 million in natural gas system improvements, supporting safety upgrades, community growth and road construction projects. A key part of this effort includes proactively replacing and upgrading natural gas pipelines and related equipment through our Safety Through Asset Reliability (STAR) initiative. It’s disciplined, ongoing work that helps ensure safe, dependable service every day.

These investments reflect a balanced approach: strengthening the system behind the scenes while supporting long-term reliability and affordability for the customers we serve.

Planning for Growing Demand

Like other states, energy demand in South Dakota continues to rise. A common question is how we keep pace while maintaining affordability and reliability. Our approach is straightforward: rely on a diverse mix of energy resources – including carbon-free wind, solar and nuclear, along with traditional coal and natural gas – and plan carefully for the future.

That work doesn’t happen alone. The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission plays an important role in reviewing our plans and investments. We share the same goal – ensuring communities across South Dakota have access to safe, dependable and reasonably priced energy. We respect that oversight and welcome the review process because it helps ensure decisions are balanced, transparent and focused on the people who rely on this service every day.

Behind every decision is a responsibility to plan ahead, prepare wisely and deliver energy customers can count on.

Investing in South Dakota Communities

The MidAmerican Energy Foundation supports organizations that strengthen the communities MidAmerican customers and employees call home. That includes the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire and Yankton, Habitat for Humanity, the Washington Pavilion’s Kirby Science Discovery Center, Levitt at the Falls summer concerts and local fairs in Clay and Union counties. The Foundation is proud to partner with groups that serve youth, promote the arts and sciences, protect South Dakota’s parks and wildlife and provide critical services like 988 support through the Helpline Center.
