MidAmerican Energy, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, serves 795,000 electric customers and 774,000 natural gas customers in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company recently applied for a Middle Mile Broadband Infrastructure Program grant from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to complete a broadband extension project in Iowa.

To support the expansion of affordable, reliable, high-speed internet to rural communities, MidAmerican will install more than 700 miles of fiber optic infrastructure through 2025. The new infrastructure will allow internet service providers and community anchor institutions the opportunity to lease low-cost dark fiber.

In early 2023, MidAmerican opened up a bid process to accept proposals from qualified contractors to engineer, procure material and construct six separate fiber optic cable routes between existing MidAmerican facilities in rural Iowa. Contractors with prior experience building turnkey, dedicated fiber optic cable routes were encouraged to submit proposals. The NTIA has yet to announce grant recipients and contractor selection is contingent on approval of MidAmerican's application.
