MidAmerican warns customers about fraudulent customer service phone numbers in internet search results
Scammers use search engine ads to promote fraudulent ways to contact customer service
DES MOINES, Iowa (July 16, 2026) – MidAmerican Energy is urging customers to be cautious when using search engines to find the company’s customer service phone number.
Scammers are using paid search engine ads and other tactics to manipulate search results and promote fraudulent call center numbers for utilities, including MidAmerican. MidAmerican’s customer service number is 888-427-5632.
When customers call a fraudulent number, which can change frequently, scammers pose as MidAmerican employees and seek personal and financial information.
"Customers will see MidAmerican’s number listed prominently on monthly bills, our app and website, which is midamericanenergy.com,” Chelsea McCracken, vice president, customer operations, said. “While you may find the right number using a search engine, we want to warn people that criminals are buying search engine ads and placing fake numbers on legitimate websites to promote fraudulent customer service numbers for utilities, including MidAmerican,” McCracken said. “We want our customers to contact us with confidence using the proper channels," she added.
To pay a utility bill online, enter MidAmerican’s web address directly, which is listed on monthly bills, and avoid using a search engine, if possible. If you search for MidAmerican’s website or phone number through a search engine, review the search results carefully before clicking.
Customers who attempt to call MidAmerican should hang up if they suspect a scam or feel threatened. MidAmerican will never demand immediate payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency or other unconventional payment methods.
Through the MidAmerican app or "My Account" on the company's payment options web page, customers can safely check their account balance, sign up for past-due bill reminders, pay online and receive payment confirmation emails.
