MidAmerican clarifies recent regulatory action for customers
Regulatory approval of customer notice marks the beginning of a months-long, transparent public review process
DES MOINES, Iowa (June 2, 2026) – MidAmerican Energy customers may have questions following the Iowa Utilities Commission’s June 2, 2026, order approving notices for MidAmerican’s proposed natural gas rate case.
“This is an early step in the regulatory process. MidAmerican has not yet filed its natural gas rate case application, and the specific rate impacts and proposed interim rates are still being finalized. We expect to file our case in early July 2026,” said Arick Sears, SVP, Regulation and Government Affairs.
Consistent with the Commission’s rules, MidAmerican will mail customers notices with additional information about the proposal before the application is filed. Those notices will reflect the filing and will include estimated bill impacts for each customer rate class, helping customers understand the proposal, how it may affect their bills, and how the regulatory review process works. Additional information will be provided at consumer comment meetings following the filing, where customers can ask questions and share their views.
MidAmerican has a long-standing commitment to putting customers first, including a focus on keeping rates as low as possible. Our electric and natural gas rates have consistently been among the lowest in the country, and that reflects a disciplined approach to managing costs and making thoughtful, long-term investments on behalf of customers. At the same time, providing safe and reliable natural gas service requires ongoing investment in the system and continued management of rising costs for labor, materials, and services. Over time, these costs have increased and are no longer fully reflected in current rates.
For more than a century, MidAmerican has invested in the strength, safety and security of our natural gas system. That work includes replacing aging infrastructure, meeting evolving safety standards, modernizing equipment and technology, and maintaining the system our customers depend on every day. Our proposed rate application – which will not be final until the Commission approves it through a contested case that will includes Iowa’s Office of Consumer Advocate – will help assure MidAmerican can continue to do that into the future.
Sears said, “We look forward to providing customers with additional information through the notice process and, after the case is filed, at consumer comment meetings where customers can learn more about the request, ask questions, and share their views as part of the Commission’s public review process.”
