According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Iowa’s rates are the sixth-lowest in the nation and 44% below the national average. During that time, we’ve successfully served large manufacturers and new data centers while maintaining low, predictable rates.

 

You may see national news stories, particularly from the East or West coasts, about new data centers driving up electricity prices. That can happen for several reasons. Some utilities rely on the open market for power, which is susceptible to price swings. In other cases, the cost of new infrastructure needed to serve data centers shows up on everyone’s monthly bill.

 

Thanks to Iowa’s regulatory structure, our additional customer protection agreements and our smart renewable energy investments, MidAmerican customers are insulated from those higher costs tied to building out the nation’s AI infrastructure.

 

MidAmerican delivers electricity through an “all of the above” energy mix, combining zero-fuel-cost renewables like wind and solar with resources available 24/7, such as coal, natural gas and nuclear. This balanced mix keeps our system reliable and helps insulate customers from sudden price swings caused by fuel costs or extreme weather.

 

 

When large companies, such as data centers or manufacturing plants, expand or move to our service area, they pay their own way. That includes the new substations or transmission lines needed to connect them to our power grid.

 

These customers also commit to paying for 10 years of power, even if their usage fluctuates. If they leave early, they pay exit penalties. These protections ensure that families, farmers and small businesses never cover someone else’s costs.

 

Large energy users also help keep rates stable for everyone. Their steady energy demand spreads the fixed costs of maintaining the electric grid across more customers, strengthening the system and helping keep rates low and predictable for you.
