    Residential Illinois customers who meet certain income levels may be exempt from late fees and deposits as stated under Sections 8-201.7 and 8-201.8 of the Illinois Public Utilities Act.
     
    If you are currently in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), you have already been approved for this exemption; late fees and deposits will not be charged. No further action is needed. 
     
    To qualify, your household income must be at 80% or less of Area Median Income (AMI) for your county of residence, or you must be eligible for, or currently enrolled in a federal Lifeline program

    Acceptable documentation to prove eligibility include, but are not limited to:
     
    Current income documents
    • Prior year state, federal, or Tribal tax return
    • Social Security statement of benefits
    • Veterans Administration statement of benefits
    • Retirement or pension statement of benefits
    • Unemployment or Worker’s Compensation statement of benefits
    • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) statement of benefits
    Loss of income documents (dated within the last 3 months)
    • Layoff/furlough notice
    • Unemployment application, approval letter, or benefit statement
    • Unemployment or Workers’ Compensation statement 
    If approved, you will not be charged late payment fees or assessed a deposit. 
     
    In addition, once qualified, any paid deposits will be returned to you within 30 days from the date your application is approved.  The deposit will first be applied to any outstanding balance on your account and remaining funds will be returned to you by check. 
     
    The completed form and supporting documentation will be accepted through mail and fax. Do not send original documents.

    Renewal Details
    Approval for the exemption must be renewed through the above process 12 months from the date of original approval. MidAmerican will remind you it is time to renew approximately one month before your exemption expires.
     
    Important Information
    Exemptions and return of deposit are not available to customers who have been identified as having tampered with their MidAmerican Energy equipment.  
     
    Eligibility for these exemptions and return of deposit does not qualify you for the Illinois Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), or any other utility financial assistance program.
