We serve approximately 1.6 million electric and natural gas customers in Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota, making us a key energy provider in the region. You can find a list of communities where we operate on our Service Territory page.Energy Generation
MidAmerican has a balanced energy mix and is a national leader in wind energy. Our energy sources include:- Wind: Our first wind farm came online in 2004, and we now safely operate more than 3,500 wind turbines across Iowa. On average, our wind fleet generates more than 7,800 megawatts of clean, renewable energy each year, which is enough electricity to power more than 2.4 million average households. We've invested nearly $16 billion in wind generation since 2004, providing our Iowa customers with more than 90% renewable energy on an annual basis.
- Solar: We're expanding our solar generation as part of our effort to meet growing demand for energy. Solar complements wind as a renewable energy source, and we plan to add 800 megawatts across several Iowa sites by the end of 2028.
- Natural gas and coal: Our natural gas-fueled turbine facilities and coal-fueled power plants are used to maintain service reliability during low-wind, low-sun days and provide backup generation in emergency situations.
- Other resources: Our generation portfolio also includes a small percentage of carbon-free nuclear and pumped hydro facilities.

Reliability
MidAmerican consistently ranks among the most reliable utilities in the nation. Our robust infrastructure and proactive maintenance programs minimize outages and ensure safe, dependable service.Value for Customers
MidAmerican is committed to keeping energy affordable. In fact, our Iowa customers enjoy electric rates 44% below the national average. Iowa has also experienced the lowest retail electric rate increases of any state over the past five years, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. We accomplish this by:
- Investing in renewable energy at no net cost to customers. Renewable energy has no fuel costs, protecting customers from market price fluctuations that drive energy bills up. Renewable energy also brings many economic benefits to host communities.
- Improving operational efficiency to keep energy rates as low as possible, proposing modest rate increases only when absolutely necessary.
- Capping our earnings through a special agreement with the Iowa Office of Consumer Advocate and other customer and stakeholder groups, which is also approved by the Iowa Utilities Commission. MidAmerican's 2025 return on equity threshold was 10.3%. When profits reach the cap, the company returns 90% of the earnings above the threshold to customers – not to shareholders – in the form of reduced earnings and reduced electric rate base.
- Maintaining strong customer protections to ensure costs are assigned fairly. Data centers and other large-load customers pay for the infrastructure and generation required to serve them. In addition, MidAmerican has strengthened customer protections through new requirements like minimum load commitments and exit penalties. These safeguards make sure our other customers – including families, farmers and small businesses – are not left holding the bag.
- Providing energy efficiency programs that help families and businesses save energy and money. These programs include discounts and rebates for energy-saving equipment, online energy assessments, energy design guidance for businesses and other incentives designed to reduce energy consumption and lower bills.
Environmental Stewardship
MidAmerican is focused on meeting our customers' energy needs while minimizing our impact on the environment. We prioritize sustainability through:- Reducing emissions by retiring our coal plants responsibly – MidAmerican has retired five of its 11 coal units, and we plan to retire the remaining plants by 2049. Through retiring these plants, from 2005 to 2024, we have reduced our C02 emissions by 47%.
- Recycling equipment like retired wind turbine blades instead of adding to landfill waste
- Protecting wildlife through initiatives that minimize our operations impact on bald eagles and bats, establishing nature conservation sites and partnering with communities to restore natural wildlife habitats
- Electrifying our fleet of service vehicles and installing EV charging stations across Iowa to make EV charging more accessible for our customers
- Providing energy efficiency programs that help homes and businesses reduce their energy consumption
