MidAmerican Energy and the Iowa Cubs Team Up for Aug. 25 Green Game

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Aug. 24, 2017) – MidAmerican Energy Company will power the Iowa Cubs’ Aug. 25 game against Memphis with clean, renewable wind energy, marking the second year a Green Game has been held at Principal Park in Des Moines.

MidAmerican Energy is sponsoring the game by donating renewable energy credits from its Pomeroy wind farm, located in Pocahontas and Calhoun counties in Iowa, to certify 100 percent of the electricity used during the game as renewable energy.

“This year’s Green Game gives fans a chance to learn more about wind energy and the benefits it offers customers, communities, the environment and the state’s economy,” said Spencer Moore, vice president of generation for MidAmerican Energy.

Videos showing the construction of MidAmerican Energy wind turbines will play on the big screen at Principal Park during pre-game activities. Louie the Lightning Bug, MidAmerican Energy’s safety mascot, will join Cubbie Bear in a variety of activities, including throwing out the first pitch.

“MidAmerican Energy is a long-time supporter of the Iowa Cubs, and we’re proud to partner with them once again to bring greater awareness to the benefits of wind energy,” said Sam Bernabe, president and general manager of the Iowa Cubs. “We’re looking forward to a fun and informative evening for all Cubs fans in attendance.”

At the Green Game, the Iowa Cubs will also show off the state-of-the-art LED lights that were installed at Principal Park this season. The new energy-efficient lights provide better visibility for players and fans.

MidAmerican Energy owns and operates more wind turbines than any other regulated energy company in the nation. Earlier this year, the company began construction on the first two sites of its Wind XI project. The project will add 2,000 megawatts of additional wind generation in Iowa by the end of 2019. When Wind XI is complete, MidAmerican Energy will produce wind energy equivalent to approximately 90 percent of its Iowa customers’ annual energy usage, bringing the company even closer to its 100 percent renewable energy vision.
