MidAmerican Energy Showcases Educational Activities, Renewable Energy at the Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Aug. 10, 2017) – MidAmerican Energy Company invites fairgoers to stop by its Visitors Center at the Iowa State Fair to learn more about its renewable energy efforts and programs that can help save customers energy and money.

Located under the wind turbine on Exposition Hill, MidAmerican Energy’s Visitors Center will host Energy Smart Kids Day today and Aug. 19. The first 2,000 kids to visit MidAmerican Energy’s Visitors Center those days will receive a free drawstring bag printed with energy-saving tips.

Student-built robots will roam MidAmerican Energy’s Visitors Center on Aug. 11, 12 and 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as FIRST Tech Challenge students display and operate their creations. FIRST Tech Challenge is a robotics program that combines the spirit of competition with science and technology. Students build robots, while engaging in science, technology, engineering and math. Through FIRST Tech Challenge, MidAmerican Energy supports and encourages students to pursue STEM education and STEM-related careers by sponsoring several teams across its service area every year.

For some hair-raising Iowa State Fair fun, join the staff of the Science Center of Iowa for “Simply Electrifying!” demonstrations in the Visitors Center on Aug. 14, 15 and 18 at 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

Louie the Lightning Bug will welcome visitors at noon every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Fair. Louie will be joined by his friend Gabby the Groundhog of Iowa One Call on Aug. 11 at 1 p.m. to help fairgoers remember the importance of calling “811” to locate underground utility lines before digging around their homes.

Once again, free reusable tote bags printed with energy-saving tips will be handed out to attendees every day of the Fair.

MidAmerican Energy’s Visitors Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Geothermal energy helps keep the Visitors Center cool during the Fair. The outside of the Visitors Center is retrofitted with LED screens that will broadcast videos about wind energy and energy efficiency tips, informational messaging and events taking place on the MidAmerican Energy Stage, which is located directly across the street from the Visitors Center.
