MidAmerican Energy Turns Principal Charity Classic Green With Clean Energy

DES MOINES, Iowa – (June 9, 2017) – The stars of the PGA TOUR Champions are back in Des Moines for the annual Principal Charity Classic®, presented by Wells Fargo at historic Wakonda Club. MidAmerican Energy is once again partnering with the Classic to make the tournament greener and to enhance the fan experience.

MidAmerican Energy is donating renewable energy certificates from its Pomeroy wind farm, located in Pocahontas and Calhoun counties in Iowa, to offset the electricity used during the tournament. This is the seventh year MidAmerican Energy has partnered with the Principal Charity Classic to deliver clean energy to the event.

In addition, the company is sponsoring the popular Green Canyon spectator viewing area. The Green Canyon offers fans a spectacular vantage point to watch play over the final three holes. In addition to prime seating, the Green Canyon features the Hornitos Hacienda Party Deck, high-definition video boards, a variety of concession items, and – new this year – expanded grandstand and skybox seating.

“We’re proud to partner with MidAmerican Energy to provide a best-seat-in-the-house viewing area for our wonderful Principal Charity Classic fans,” said Greg Conrad, Principal Charity Classic Tournament Director. “The Green Canyon is the perfect place for fans to gather, socialize and watch thrilling competition across holes 16, 17 and 18.”

Kathryn Kunert, vice president, economic connection and integration for MidAmerican Energy, said the Principal Charity Classic sponsorship is a natural tie-in with the company’s vision to produce enough renewable energy each year to equal 100 percent of its customers’ usage.

“We’re proud to power the Classic with clean energy produced right here in Iowa, and to give community members another reason to come out and enjoy the beautiful Wakonda grounds from the Green Canyon,” Kunert said.

Fans are encouraged to watch the MidAmerican Energy Green Canyon come to life via the KCCI CBS 8 Live Look-In Camera, which is streaming live 24 hours a day at

The Principal Charity Classic was named the PGA TOUR Champions Tournament of the Year in 2016 and has raised nearly $10 million in the last decade to benefit children’s charities in central Iowa and across the state.

The tournament opened to the public on Wednesday for two days of Pro-Am rounds. Competition rounds run today through Sunday. This year’s event boasts a strong field of players, including World Golf Hall of Fame members Fred Couples and Bernhard Langer, defending champion Scott McCarron, and fan favorites Jesper Parnevik, Billy Andrade, Fred Funk, Jay Haas, Fuzzy Zoeller and many more.
