Make Earth Day Every Day With a Switch to LED Bulbs

DES MOINES, Iowa – (April 19, 2017) – The annual Earth Day celebration on April 22 is a perfect time for customers to embrace lifestyle changes that improve the health of the planet. One easy change that saves energy and cuts greenhouse gases is replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs. But consumers need to be aware that not all LEDs are created equal.

“We’re excited so many customers are making the switch to LEDs,” said Tina Yoder, director, energy efficiency for MidAmerican Energy Company. “But it’s important for them to know that just picking a bulb marked ‘LED’ isn’t enough. To get the best bulb at a great price, they need to look for two things: the ENERGY STAR product label and the Be Bright logo.”

The ENERGY STAR label means an LED has stood up to rigorous, independent third-party testing and delivers:

  • Exceptional energy efficiency by using at least 75% less energy than an incandescent bulb and not using energy when the bulb is turned off

  • A minimum three-year warranty and life span that is up to 25 times longer than an incandescent bulb

  • Excellent color quality and light output

  • Verified compliance with more than 20 industry standards and procedures

  • UL-listing for fire safety meaning it must meet stringent Underwriters Laboratories safety standards, similar to those for smoke and CO2 detectors

Consumers will also see lower maintenance costs with ENERGY STAR certified LEDs because bulbs have an exceptionally long life and won’t break like a standard incandescent bulb. Plus, LEDs can now be used in more places than ever as they come in a wider range of sizes and colors, and are available with features such as automatic daylight shut-off, motion detection and dimming capabilities.

To encourage customers to experience the ENERGY STAR difference for themselves, MidAmerican Energy is sponsoring the Be Bright lighting program. Iowa and Illinois customers simply visit a participating retailer and look for the Be Bright label. This label means that consumers are getting an ENERGY STAR bulb at a special low price. There is no paperwork or rebate slips to deal with because the discount is built right into the retail price. ENERGY STAR makes it simple to help customers choose the best bulb, color and brightness.
