MidAmerican Energy Preparing for Winter Storm

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Jan. 13, 2017) – With freezing rain expected to affect MidAmerican Energy’s service territory beginning Sunday evening, the company is taking steps to prepare for potential power outages.

“We will have crews staged throughout our service territory and our strategic response plan in place prior to the storms arrival,” said Jim Dougherty, vice president, electric delivery, for MidAmerican Energy. “Our line mechanics, tree personnel and management team are ready and prepared to respond anytime outages occur. We appreciate the dedication of our employees who work around-the-clock to keep our customers’ heat and lights on during inclement weather.”

Freezing rain can weigh down tree branches causing them to break or fall onto power lines, resulting in outages. According to, ice can increase the weight of tree branches by 30 times, and a half-inch of ice on power lines can add 500 pounds of extra weight.

MidAmerican Energy reminds customers to stay far away from downed power lines. Touching an energized power line can be fatal. Fallen lines are most common after storms. Customers should use caution when stepping outside their home during a power outage; a downed power line may be just outside the door or hidden by brush or debris. Customers who see a downed line or tree limbs hanging on lines should call MidAmerican Energy immediately at 800-799-4443.

Additionally, the company encourages customers to prepare by assembling an emergency safety kit that includes flashlights, extra batteries, bottled water, non-perishable foods, medicines, a first aid kit and plenty of blankets and warm sweaters.

Customers can report power outages online or call MidAmerican Energy at 800-799-4443. Prior to a storm, it is a good idea to fully charge cell phones or have a battery-powered phone charger on hand to monitor restoration efforts. Outage updates can be found on MidAmerican Energy’s outage map or by following the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
