2016 Principal Charity Classic enhances fan experience with Green Canyon, sponsored by MidAmerican Energy
DES MOINES, Iowa – (June 1, 2016) – MidAmerican Energy Company is teaming up with the Principal Charity Classic
presented by Wells Fargo to enhance the viewing experience for fans at this year’s event.
The MidAmerican Energy Green Canyon creates a stadium-like atmosphere in the picturesque areas around the 16th, 17th and 18th holes at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, where the PGA TOUR Champions event tees off this week. Fans visiting the Green Canyon can enjoy the new Hornitos Hacienda Party Deck, prime hillside seating, high-definition video boards, and much more.
“The three finishing holes are where the excitement of the tournament reaches its peak,” said Greg Conrad, Principal Charity Classic Tournament Director. “We wanted the spectator areas and fan amenities surrounding these holes to reflect that excitement. We’re delighted to have MidAmerican Energy as a partner in creating this new hot spot for fans at the Principal Charity Classic.”
Since 2011, MidAmerican Energy has sponsored the tournament’s Shoot For Zero initiative, a series of efforts designed to minimize the environmental impact of the event. Kathryn Kunert, vice president, economic connection and integration for MidAmerican Energy, said the Green Canyon sponsorship in 2016 is another way the company demonstrates its commitment to an event that contributes to the economic vitality and quality of life in central Iowa.
“We’re proud of the fact that we helped make the Principal Charity Classic the first carbon-neutral event on the PGA TOUR Champions,” Kunert said. “With the creation of the Green Canyon, we’re giving fans another reason to come out and enjoy this beautiful setting at Wakonda Club and see some of the world’s best golfers. The Green Canyon is a natural tie-in with MidAmerican Energy’s efforts to create a cleaner, greener Iowa through the use of renewable energy.”
The MidAmerican Energy Green Canyon is located just a short walk from the Park Avenue entrance to Wakonda Club. From this vantage point, fans can watch players putt on the par-4 16th hole, play the par-3 17th, and tee off on the 18th hole. Food, drink and merchandise vendors are located nearby. Fans who can’t make it to the course can follow the action in the Green Canyon 24 hours a day via the KCCI-8 Live Look-In Camera, which will be streaming video on the tournament website.
The Principal Charity Classic opened to the public on May 31, with the professional tournament teeing off Friday through Sunday, June 3-5. A popular stop on the PGA TOUR Champions schedule, this year’s event boasts a strong field of 81 Champions players, including newcomers John Daly and Miguel Angel Jimenez and defending champion Mark Calcavecchia. Since 2007, the event has contributed more than $7.7 million to children’s charities in central Iowa and across the state.
