MidAmerican Energy Encourages Customers Behind on Bills to Call as Moratorium Ends
DES MOINES, Iowa – (April 1, 2016) – The winter moratorium in Iowa ends today. The moratorium prevents low-income eligible customers from being disconnected for non-payment from Nov. 1 through April 1, during the coldest months of the year. MidAmerican Energy Company encourages all customers who are concerned about paying their energy bill to call them toll-free at 888-427-5632 to discuss possible payment arrangements.
“We understand that every customer’s financial situation is unique, and we want to do whatever we can to help customers get back on track,” said Terry Ousley, vice president, customer service for MidAmerican Energy. “We have a variety of payment options, can set up payment agreements, and offer budget billing.”
Unfortunately, the end of the moratorium is often a time when scammers prey on energy customers. Typically, scammers pose as energy employees and threaten to shut off power unless immediate payment is made using a credit card or pre-paid (Green Dot) card. Customers who receive a suspicious call threatening immediate disconnection should hang up and call local police and MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632 to report the scam and check on the status of their account.
Customers struggling to pay their bills are encouraged to contact their local community action agency
to determine if they qualify for energy assistance. MidAmerican Energy’s I CARE program generates funds for local community action agencies to assist customers who qualify for the state’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) with their bills. I CARE funds come from customer donations, with a 25 percent match from MidAmerican Energy. All customer donations stay in the community in which they were provided. In the last year, Iowa customers contributed nearly $200,000 to the I CARE program to help families in need.
