LED Light Bulb Prices Drop More Than 50 Percent in One Year

DES MOINES, Iowa – (March 30, 2016) – Prices on energy-saving LED light bulbs dropped by more than 50 percent in the last year, and with a MidAmerican Energy discount they’re even lower, with an average retail price of $2.50.

“Like all new technology, the price of LEDs has dropped significantly over the last few years, making it an easy decision when it comes to deciding whether LEDs or incandescent bulbs provide more value,” said Tina Yoder, director, energy efficiency for MidAmerican Energy. “The lower the price, the faster you’ll earn your money back through energy savings.”

Yoder said LEDs can help customers save energy and reduce their electricity bills. They work the same way as incandescent bulbs, offering the same brightness, yet they are much more efficient, and once installed, customers can reap savings for years.

LED light bulbs use just 15-20 percent of the energy an incandescent bulb uses and last up to 40 times longer, many with life spans over 20 years.

MidAmerican Energy works with lighting distributors in Iowa and select retail stores to offer a point-of-sale discount on certain types of LED bulbs through the Be Bright program. Be Bright is a lighting discount program that makes ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs more affordable. The program allows consumers to receive an instant discount on select LED purchases in select retail locations. Just look for the Be Bright label on the shelf, which indicates that you’re purchasing an ENERGY STAR certified bulb. The price tag includes the discount so no coupons or rebate forms are needed. A number of LED light bulbs, comparable in brightness to 60-watt incandescent bulbs, can be found at select retailers for as low as $1.99 with the Be Bright label.

“Be Bright is a simple discount program, requiring no forms or coupons,” said Yoder. “We wanted to make it easy for customers to make energy-efficiency improvements on their own in order to conserve energy and reduce their monthly bill, so we worked directly with retailers.”

MidAmerican Energy will host Be Bright events in retail stores in West Des Moines on April 1, Keokuk and Moline, Ill. on April 6, and Decorah on April 13. During the events, lighting experts will be available to help consumers learn more about the benefits of LED bulbs and how to choose the right bulb for the right job. Visit the Be Bright website for a listing of locations and times or call 800-339-6856.

Tips for Buying LED Bulbs

1. Before going to the store, inspect your light fixture to determine the size and brightness of LED you need.

2. Choose bulbs with the Be Bright label and ENERGY STAR logo. The Be Bright label means a discount is already included in the price tag. Only bulbs that meet or exceed government energy efficiency and performance standards can carry the ENERGY STAR logo.

3. With LEDs, a bulb’s lumen count, or brightness, is more important than the energy it uses. Look for LED bulbs with the lumens you need, not watts consumed. For instance, a 450-lumen LED bulb replaces a typical 40-watt incandescent bulb, and a LED bulb with 800 lumens easily replaces a 60-watt incandescent bulb. Visit the Be Bright website for a full watt-to-lumen comparison chart.
