MidAmerican Energy Announces Trees Please! Grant Awards
DES MOINES, Iowa – (March 2, 2016) – A total of 65 Iowa cities and community organizations are receiving grants totaling $205,000 through MidAmerican Energy’s Trees Please!
energy efficiency program.
The program provides grants to communities to fund tree planting projects in public areas such as parks and roadways. Since 1998, MidAmerican Energy has awarded more than $3.6 million in funding.
“We’re proud to give back to communities through the Trees Please!
program,” said Tina Yoder, director, energy efficiency for MidAmerican Energy. “Trees provide many benefits, including energy efficiency. Trees serve as natural windbreaks in the winter and provide shade to homes and businesses in the summer.”
Yoder said planting the right tree in the right place can lead to energy savings. According to USDA Forest Service research, strategically placed mature trees can cut annual air conditioning demands up to 56 percent and heating costs up to 3 percent.
Cities and community organizations submit applications to MidAmerican Energy to be considered for Trees Please!
grants of $1,000 or more. Grant recipients are selected based on the individual merits of the project, the benefit to the community, and the ability to obtain matching funds.
Checks will be delivered to winning communities beginning this month. For more information about Trees Please!
