IMT Des Moines Marathon offers an array of events, some running on renewable energy
DES MOINES, Iowa – (Oct. 14, 2015) – The IMT Des Moines Marathon
and MidAmerican Energy Company
are teaming up to enhance the marathon experience for runners and the public this weekend.
A two-day MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series
will be held Friday, Oct. 16 from 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to coincide with the Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo
. The MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series will offer presentations on running and living healthy lifestyles by some of the sport’s most well-known figures, including marathon filmmaker Jon Dunham and Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon.
In addition to sponsoring the Speaker Series, MidAmerican Energy is helping the marathon “go green” by retiring Renewable Energy Credits generated from its Pomeroy wind farm to offset 100 percent of the electricity used at the Expo and Speaker Series with wind energy. This represents a reduction of approximately 10 tons of carbon dioxide emissions – the same as consuming 1,022 gallons of gasoline.
“We are proud to partner with the IMT Des Moines Marathon for the sixth year to promote clean, renewable wind energy and to support a wonderful event that brings inspiring athletes and speakers to our community,” said Mike Gehringer, vice president, renewable energy for MidAmerican Energy.
MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series headliner Dunham
, 25-time marathon finisher and award-winning director of “Spirit of the Marathon” and “Spirit of the Marathon II,” will show both films during the series. In addition, Dunham will preview his recent work “Boston,” the first-ever documentary film about the Boston Marathon.
“We’re excited to welcome Jon back to our event and to show our community a first look at his new documentary,” said Chris Burch, race director, IMT Des Moines Marathon. “He’s an accomplished filmmaker who captures our sport in a way no one else can. It is a true privilege to host him in Des Moines for our running community.”
In addition to Dunham, speakers include Zachary Marion, with Altra Footwear, who will teach the basic principles of running form to help increase efficiency and decrease injuries, and leaders with the charity Above + Beyond Cancer who will speak on topics such as meditation, living a healthy lifestyle and journeys to places such as Mount Everest Base Camp.
Iconic athlete and social advocate Switzer
will make a special appearance at the event. Switzer is best known for running the Boston Marathon in 1967 as well as her successful athletic and broadcast career. Fans can meet Switzer at a booth at the Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo where she will be signing books and providing photo opportunities.
The MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series and Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo will be held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The events are free and open to the public. For details and a complete schedule of events, or to register to run, go to DesMoinesMarathon.com
