MidAmerican Energy I CARE Helps Customers Help Their Neighbors

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Feb. 17, 2015) – When temperatures drop, energy consumption rises, leading to an increase in requests for heating assistance. MidAmerican Energy Company offers customers an easy way to help those in their community struggling to pay their heating bills.

MidAmerican Energy’s I CARE program is dedicated to helping those in need stay warm and safe this winter. The program raises funds for local agencies that assist individuals who are unemployed, living on fixed or low incomes, or experiencing a family crisis. The agencies use I CARE funds to help residents pay their heating bills or make their homes more energy efficient.

I CARE funding comes from customer donations, with a 25 percent match from MidAmerican Energy. In 2014, customer donations totaled $237,408 and MidAmerican Energy contributed $59,352 for a total of $296,760.

“As cold temperatures continue, some people can’t afford to stay warm,” said Terry Ousley, vice president, customer satisfaction for MidAmerican Energy. “That is where I CARE comes in. It is a partnership between our customers and our company to help make a real difference for those experiencing hardship.”

The tax-deductible donations go directly to local community action agencies in the area in which the contribution originated. The local agencies administer the funds and determine eligibility. To qualify, customers must meet their state’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) guidelines.

Customers can contribute to I CARE in two ways: by simply adding a dollar amount to their monthly MidAmerican Energy bill payment and noting on the bill stub or online that the overpayment should be applied to I CARE, or by filling out an online pledge form and making a one-time or recurring monthly donation.

In addition to contributing to local agencies through I CARE, MidAmerican Energy offers other forms of assistance to customers having difficulty paying their heating bills. Ousley encourages customers who are at risk of falling behind on their bills to call MidAmerican Energy right away.

“We want to help customers better manage their energy expenses, and we have a variety of payment options, plans and budget billing available,” said Ousley. “We want customers to know they can call us and we will do whatever we can to help.”

In addition to I CARE, individuals looking to support a family member, friend or neighbor in need can make a phone payment to be applied directly to that customer’s account by calling MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632. Payments can be made anonymously, or MidAmerican Energy can send the recipient a gift receipt. There is no charge to either the giver or receiver for this service.
