Recycling program from MidAmerican Energy offers cash for old appliances

DES MOINES, Iowa – (Sept. 15, 2014) – Is there an energy hog hiding in your home?
Check your basement or your garage: do you have an old refrigerator or freezer stashed there? How about a window air conditioner you don’t need any more? Keeping a spare refrigerator or freezer running can add $100 or more to a home’s energy bill each year. That’s why MidAmerican Energy Company offers residential electric customers a free Appliance Recycling program that turns old appliances into cold, hard cash.
Customers with a working refrigerator, freezer or room air conditioner to be recycled can call a toll-free number to schedule an appliance pick-up. The recycling company will haul away the old appliance free of charge, and MidAmerican Energy will send the customer a rebate of $50 for a refrigerator or freezer and $25 for an air conditioner. “These cash rebates, combined with rebates available on the purchase of new ENERGY STAR®-qualified appliances and the new appliances’ lower operating costs, make replacing older appliances more affordable than many people realize,” said Tina Yoder, manager, energy efficiency for MidAmerican Energy.
“Every appliance comes with two price tags: the price you pay to purchase it, and the price you pay to operate and maintain it,” Yoder said. “Older appliances use two to three times more electricity than today’s high-efficiency models. Customers should ask themselves if they really need a freezer in the basement or an extra refrigerator in the garage. If they do, we suggest they recycle the older unit and replace it with a new energy-efficient one. With rebates and energy savings, the new appliance will pay for itself in a relatively short period of time.”
Recycling old appliances also makes sense from an environmental standpoint. Older refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners take up space in landfills and can release ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as they degrade. MidAmerican Energy partners with the Environmental Protection Agency through its Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program to ensure that components and materials in the discarded appliance are either captured for a beneficial use or disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
MidAmerican Energy is promoting its free Appliance Recycling program throughout September as part of an ongoing campaign to educate customers about the company’s energy efficiency programs. The campaign will include TV, radio and print advertising as well as online messages and other forms of communication with customers.
To schedule a free Appliance Recycling pickup, MidAmerican Energy residential electric customers may call 800-621-2757 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eligible refrigerators and freezers must be 10 cubic feet or larger, and no commercial sizes can be accepted. To qualify for a rebate, the appliance must be in working condition (i.e., the motor must run and the unit must cool).
