Frigid February Temperatures Cause an Increase in Overall Customer Usage and Natural Gas Prices
DES MOINES, Iowa – (March 3, 2014) – MidAmerican Energy Company is reminding its customers about energy efficiency and payment programs after a colder-than-normal February and increased natural gas market prices.
Due to high demand for natural gas across the U.S., market prices have increased, causing the March 2014 gas supply charge for MidAmerican Energy’s Illinois customers to be approximately 25 percent greater than the February 2014 gas supply charge. The cost of natural gas is passed through dollar-for-dollar on customers’ bills without any markup by MidAmerican Energy. Because of this natural gas cost increase, MidAmerican Energy wants its customers to be prepared for the possibility of higher-than-normal utility bill amounts so customers can adjust their current usage, budget for the expense, and/or utilize the company’s assistance programs or payment options.
MidAmerican Energy is committed to working with customers who may have difficulty paying their energy bill. The company encourages all customers who have concerns to call customer service at 888-427-5632 to establish payment arrangements or learn about assistance programs. MidAmerican Energy understands that each customer’s financial situation is unique and handles customers’ concerns on a case-by-case basis.
Customers who want to ease fluctuations in monthly bill amounts may want to consider MidAmerican Energy’s Budget Billing program. The total annual cost for electricity and natural gas remains the same, but customers have the convenience of a more predictable bill amount each month. An average monthly amount is based on the customer’s past energy use. Participation in the program is free and available to all customers.
MidAmerican Energy also encourages its customers on ways to be energy efficient. There are simple steps customers can take to reduce the amount of energy they use and, in turn, reduce their energy bill. Keeping the furnace maintained, sealing drafty windows and doors, keeping registers clear of obstacles, and adjusting a thermostat can help reduce the amount of an energy bill. MidAmerican Energy customers also may qualify for an in-home energy assessment, where an energy specialist will provide a report on the condition of a home’s insulation, heating and cooling efficiency, water heating equipment and windows.
