Build a Wind Sock

Here's a fun way to find out the direction of the wind: try making a wind sock. Let's get started!

  1. Look in the TOOLKIT (the box at the right) to find a list of materials you need. Note: you can make a weatherproof wind sock by substituting plastic bags or nylon fabric instead of paper.

  2. Select the View Instructions button below the TOOLKIT. Then, follow the instructions on the drawing.

  3. Tie your finished wind sock to the top of a pole.

  4. Use your wind sock and the magnetic compass to measure the wind direction. Notice how high the wind lifts the wind sock.
