Scam Impacting MidAmerican Energy’s Illinois Customers

DES MOINES, Iowa – (May 2, 2013) – MidAmerican Energy Company is warning the public about a telephone scam that may target its Illinois customers.

Since last week, dozens of MidAmerican Energy’s Illinois customers have reported receiving recorded messages claiming to be from Ameren. The message states that Ameren can help customers save money on their utility bills. In some cases, the robocalls have called a particular number multiple times within a day or week. MidAmerican Energy wants its customers to know that there are no alternative retail electric suppliers registered to solicit MidAmerican Energy customers in Illinois. Ameren Energy Marketing is not making these calls. MidAmerican Energy is working with Ameren, the Illinois Commerce Commission and local authorities to determine the source of the calls.

Credit card numbers, account information and personal information should not be provided in response to suspicious or unsolicited calls. If a customer receives a suspicious call or any other unusual contact or offer related to energy services from a person or company, the customer should end the call immediately and notify local law enforcement authorities. The customer should then contact MidAmerican Energy at 888-427-5632 to report the incident and seek assistance.
