CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – (April 18, 2013) – This weekend, consumers in Eastern Iowa can upgrade their lighting during a special sale on LED bulbs, sponsored by MidAmerican Energy Company and Interstate Power and Light Company, an Alliant Energy company.

In recognition of Earth Day, which falls on Monday, April 22, Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy are showcasing the energy-saving opportunities of LED lighting technology. LEDs last 25 times longer and use 75 percent less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says lighting makes up approximately 13 percent of all residential energy use.

On Saturday, April 20, customers can stop by Lowe’s in Coralville from 10 a.m. to noon or Lowe’s in Cedar Rapids from 2 to 4 p.m. and speak with a lighting expert to see the advantages of LED bulbs and find the best option for their home or business needs.

Alliant Energy and MidAmerican Energy are offering instant rebates of up to $10 on select LED bulbs while supplies last. More specific details are available in store.

Since LEDs are best for focused, directional lighting, they are popular in home offices, kitchens, and cabinet lighting. Recessed downlight/flood light LED options are useful in hallways and bathrooms. The best-selling LED bulb to date is the covered A-shape or A-line, a modern take on Thomas Edison’s classic incandescent. It suits wall sconces, table or reading lamps, and ceiling fixtures.

Highlights of LED bulbs:
  • Long-lasting: Depending on running times, LEDs can last decades. Imagine not having to change a light bulb from the time that your child is born until after he or she graduates.
  • Light quality: LEDs cast directional, white light and never burn out; rather, they dim with time.
  • Mercury-free: LEDs do not contain mercury and do not require special recycling.
  • Instant on: While most CFLs now have “instant on” capabilities, this is never an issue for LEDs. They immediately come on full and bright.
