Northern Powergrid

Northern Powergrid is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of MidAmerican Energy Holdings
Company that delivers electricity to 3.8 million homes and businesses in northeast
England, Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire through its two subsidiaries,
Northern Powergrid (Northeast) Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire).
Northern Powergrid (Northeast) was acquired in 1996. Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire)
was acquired in 2001. The companies’
service territories are adjacent.
Together, the companies include:
- 25,000 square kilometers of service territory
- Nearly 39,000 gigawatt-hours of electricity distributed per year
- 91,000 miles of overhead lines and underground cables
Northern Powergrid also owns a contracting subsidiary, Integrated Utility Services,
that designs and builds power projects for industrial customers and other utilities.
CE Gas, Northern Powergrid’s natural gas exploration subsidiary, owns natural
gas-producing fields in Poland and the North Sea off the coast of the U.K.
Northern Powergrid’s safety performance consistently scores well – within MidAmerican
Energy Holdings Company and the U.K. utility industry. In 2011, all three U.K.
subsidiaries – Northern Powergrid (Northeast), Northern Powergrid (Yorkshire), and Integrated Utility –
Services) earned Gold Medals from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
