AMR, or automated meter reading, is advanced technology that lets MidAmerican Energy obtain your MidAmerican meter readings simply by driving through your neighborhood. Each billing cycle, our specially equipped vehicles will obtain the energy usage information from new, more advanced meters using a radio frequency.

As a customer uses electricity or natural gas, a device in the new and/or updated meter records the usage. MidAmerican has chosen a mobile automated system which uses vehicles equipped with radio transceivers to read transmitter-equipped gas and electric meters without physical access to the meter. As the MidAmerican vehicle drives through a neighborhood, meter readings will be sent by the transmitter to a receiver in the vehicle.

Does the AMR meter look different than current meters?
The new electric meters are generally the same size as the existing meters. However, the new electric meters will have a digital display instead of traditional dials. For the majority of MidAmerican�s customers, the existing gas meter will look nearly identical with traditional dials, but with a transmitting device installed.

Will I have to pay for the device on my gas meter or the new electric meter?
No. You will not be charged for the installation of the automated meter reading technology.

Are other utilities using AMR?
Yes. Many other utility companies use automated meter reading technology.
