Customer Generation

Distributed Generation projects are electric power generators either directly interconnected to MidAmerican Energy’s electric distribution system or connected to the electric facilities of a MidAmerican electric retail customer. An interconnection is the connection of electric facilities between MidAmerican and a customer. Distributed generation includes only electric generators rated up to 10,000 kilowatts that ultimately interconnect to MidAmerican’s electric distribution system at voltages less than 100 kilovolts. Common distributed generation technologies include, but are not limited to: wind turbines, solar, internal combustion engines, gas turbines and fuel cells. An example of distributed generation is a MidAmerican customer that owns and installs a wind turbine on their premises to either offset their electricity use or to receive other energy, environmental or financial benefits.

A customer has an option of choosing between two rates applicable to distributed generation, the Net Metering Rate and the Cogeneration and Small Power Production Facilities Rate.

Customers interested in owning and installing distributed generation must complete the distributed generation interconnection process, enter into an interconnection agreement and receive written permission before operating a generator in parallel with MidAmerican’s electric distribution system. The purpose of the interconnection process is to protect our other customers and employees from risks that could result from the improper installation of distributed generation.

For more information, review MidAmerican's distributed generation interconnection process overview or distributed generation FAQs. Interconnection applications for each state are:

Iowa and South Dakota
Small Generating Facility or Net Billed Facility No Larger than 500 kW
Small Generating Facility or Net Billed Facility 501 kW - 20,000 kW

Illinois
Distributed Generation Facilities 10 kW and Smaller
Distributed Generation Facilities - Greater than 10 kW to 10 MW or Less
