Renewable Energy
Philippines

Geothermal Steam
Three geothermal plants – located in Malitbog, Mahanagdong
and Upper Mahiao in the province of Leyte in southern Philippines – and
the
Casecnan project – a hydroelectric facility located
in the northern part of Luzon, the Philippines’ main island – provide energy
from naturally occuring resources.
Energy produced by the Malitbog, Mahanagdong and Upper Mahiao projects is
from naturally occurring geothermal steam, a preferred energy source because
it is reliable, renewable, clean, indigenous and economical. This fuel source
is especially valuable in countries like the Philippines where abundant
geothermal resources can be utilized to satisfy increasing electric power
demands.
Run-of-the-River Hydro
CalEnergy
Generation also operates the Casecnan project which uses nonpolluting, renewable, indigenous
hydroelectric sources, as water from the Casecnan and Taan Rivers is collected
and diverted by two small diversion weirs. In addition to the project's
electricity generation, diverted water also is used for agricultural
purposes.
