SOUTH DAKOTA NONRESIDENTIAL ELECTRIC ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM SUSPENSION
MidAmerican Energy Company has offered its Nonresidential Custom Systems, Nonresidential Equipment
(Variable-Speed Drives, Lighting Equipment, and Heating and Cooling Equipment) and BusinessCheck® programs to South Dakota
customers since 2009. Program participation is increasing as more customers become interested in saving energy and money
through energy efficiency.
Due to increased participation, 2013 program funding for the electric measures, projects, process improvements and energy
audits associated with the above-referenced programs is nearly depleted. As a result, MidAmerican Energy has suspended the
electric portions of the 2013 Nonresidential Custom Systems, Nonresidential Equipment and BusinessCheck programs.
Nonresidential natural gas measures, projects, process improvements and energy audits are not being suspended.
Residential energy efficiency programs (electric and natural gas) are not affected.
Please note these important points:
- MidAmerican Energy intends to resume the affected programs Jan. 1, 2014.
- If you currently are working on projects, you have until Aug. 15, 2013, to complete the installation and submit rebate applications. We will continue to process applications in the order received and as funding allows. Rebate applications received on or before Aug. 15, 2013, that cannot be paid in 2013 will be processed in early 2014.
- Projects completed and invoiced during the programs’ suspension from Aug. 16, 2013, through Dec. 31, 2013, will not be eligible for a rebate.
If you have questions about the programs or the status of a rebate application, call 800-318-8915 for the Nonresidential
Custom Systems program, 800-894-9599 for the Nonresidential Equipment program or 877-401-4059 for the BusinessCheck program.

small business, the BusinessCheck energy assessment can start reducing energy costs immediately
and can provide additional ways to save on future energy costs – and it won't cost a thing!
All small buildings located in South Dakota that receive electricity and/or natural gas
supplied directly from MidAmerican Energy are eligible to be enrolled in the BusinessCheck
program, including small retail businesses, restaurants, small office buildings,
governmental organizations, churches, health care facilities and other for-profit and
nonprofit organizations' small buildings. This program is designed to evaluate energy use
in buildings up to 25,000 sq.ft.
Multifamily buildings in South Dakota that receive electricity and/or natural gas supplied
directly from MidAmerican Energy also may be eligible for the energy assessment. To qualify
for a multifamily housing assessment, the building must meet the following requirements:
What is a BusinessCheck Energy Assessment?
- Primary heating energy must be supplied directly by MidAmerican Energy
- Four or more living units
- An apartment complex
- A condominium
- Built before Dec. 31, 2002
It is an evaluation of how your small business uses energy and includes specific recommendations on ways you can use energy more efficiently and reduce your monthly energy bill.
In addition to receiving recommendations on ways to save on energy bills, customers have the option to allow installation of energy-saving measures during or following assessments such as:
- Faucet aerators
- Low-flow showerheads
- LED exit sign retrofits (multifamily excluded)
- Water pipe insulation (multifamily excluded)
Following the assessment, participating customers will receive a report that includes
energy-saving actions, complete with estimates of potential energy and cost savings,
including low- or no-cost suggestions. The report also will include information regarding
available MidAmerican Energy rebates to help ease the cost of investing in high-efficiency
equipment that deliver long-term energy and energy cost savings. Rebates are offered on
installed, qualifying energy efficiency measures in accordance with MidAmerican Energy's
Nonresidential Equipment and Custom Systems programs.
