Improved Attic Insulationarrows

Improving attic insulation reduces heat loss in the winter and heat gain in the summer. Ceiling insulation improves comfort by bringing ceiling temperatures closer to room temperatures.

The effectiveness of insulation is stated in R-value. R stands for the resistance to heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation. When buying insulation, look for R-value. The recommended attic insulation R-value for most homes in Iowa is R-49.

In the winter, insulation substantially reduces the quantity of heat passing through ceilings, walls and floors to the outside or adjacent unheated spaces. In the summer, insulation reduces the flow of outdoor heat to the inside. By reducing this flow, less energy is consumed and costs are reduced.
