Electric Generation
At the end of 2010, MidAmerican Energy had 7,048 megawatts of owned and contracted generating capacity. Approximately 52 percent was fueled by coal; 21 percent by natural gas and oil; 20 percent by wind, hydroelectric and biomass; and 7 percent by nuclear.
We are ranked No. 1 in the nation in ownership of wind-powered electric generation among rate-regulated utilities.
Production costs at our coal-fueled generation stations are lower than regional and national averages. We also have majority ownership in five of the six jointly owned coal-fueled generating stations in Iowa.
